When it rains it pours !

My website www.erzendesign.com has passed 200hits which is pretty awesome considering it's been up for about a month. I think I've finally found out a good solution for people to see my photos. I created a facebook page here Erzen Design and I've been posting many of the events I do here. Then about a week later I put them on my website, this way everyone can see the pictures, and it's been providing me with some exposure, and had lead to some work.

I've been shooting a ton of events lately, and it's not going to stop anytime soon, some big events are coming up that I'll be involved in. I need to put together an online calendar.

I shot a bunch of random video footage, planned on doing much more, but there was an issue of bad weather, and a mission battery charger :/ The desert is my favorite playground, I've spend many nights, and days out in the desert. The richness in color of the mountains, the stillness of life, the darkness of the sky, these are magically when you live near a Police Station and a major freeway.

First time trying long exposure night time, and it's windy, and the moon was crazy bright.

Sometimes photography takes teamwork, and I couldn't of gotten these great shots without my friend Johnathan Kramm's help. There was a bunch of trail and error, the blackness of the desert was great, it pulled all the light except for the LED.

This was a failed attempt at an idea, still makes for an interesting shot.

Success!

We used a high power laser, with long exposure. She can't see out of those goggles, if this light was shining in front of her like this it's highly possible she's be blind. Also if this laser light reflects off something and directly hit the lens it can burn or the sensor.

I have a large selection of friends from all factions of life, and have made some interesting connections over the year living in Los Angeles. One of those friends is Kevin Flint. Kevin is know for Dystopian Studios, the new genre bending club Impulse, and a kickass networking event called Collab. Kevin's uniquely creative, and hosts some crazy fun parties too.

For his birthday he came up with a idea called Dystopian Weekend, where every year he gathered up a group of those willing to go out to the desert in the middle of nowhere, with weapons, costumes, booze, and lots of bass. After seeing the pictures from last year, and knowing about a handful of people going, I figured it's a can't miss event:

Dystopian Weekend III is here and it will be bigger, better and chock full o' more awesome than ever.

For those who have never been, we take this awesome patch of desert about 2 hours from LA, and turn it into our playground for a weekend. We shoot guns (and teach those who have never shot a gun how to, we'll have a few guns available for you to try.) We get addled. We play loud music. We entertain each other with awesome fire performances, dancing, hooping, our technological monstrosities and such. We cook food over fire. We take awesome photos that you can turn into your FB profile photo for the next 12 months. We make big explosions. And we make some awesome new friends.

The location is AUTOMOBILE ACCESSIBLE (4 wd not required.) There are some cool places to hike and explore in the area, and for those with off road vehicles, some cool trails to attack.
If you have any questions, ask away. We will provide much more info to those who are attending.

The weekend didn't disappoint, made some new friends, got to see some old ones, and it all ended up being a rather interesting weekend.

It's been almost a year since I purchased my Canon 2ti, and entered into my foray of "Professional Photography" and what a year it's been. We've had many exciting adventures together, my camera and I. We're always learning from each other, trying out new techniques, ideas, and polishing up on the basics. I've grown leaps and bounds as a photographer over the last year, and that's thanks to all those other amazing people out there that have helped me or gave advice, people like Curious Josh, who was kind enough to respond to an email I had with a ton of basic photography questions when I was first starting out, and Jessica Reinhardt: Master of the Polaroid, she gave me an intense 4 hour crash course in time-lapse and long exposure photography the night after I purchased my camera. One aspect of photography I didn't expect was the creativity and the helpfulness of the community. It's only the beginning, I've meet a ton on super cool people online and in real life, also lead to a couple of opportunities and I've meet man insanely talented people, some have even become good friends.

I'm continuing to update my Portfolio, and I'm close to finishing my actual website www.ErzenDesign.com. I've taken all that knowledge that I learned over the last year and been out shooting as much as I can. It's funny in retrospect, because I've never been great at photoshop/lightwave, and so when I shoot I over shoot and make sure I get the best possible shot I can.

For the website, I've gathered a bunch of various photos, and have to reedit them. A long process. When it came time to edit these photos, I went looking for tutorials, guides, forums and advice on photography and photo editing. This was a helpful tutorial.

Froknowsphoto.com was a great source of information. Do you have a favorite video? Post a link in the comments. I'm fortunate to have I gathered a few of my friends for an portfolio test shoot/practice shoot. So when it came time to edit these pictures I felt, it's time to jump to that next level and seriously sit down and edit a few of these pictures, and see what I can come up with. Here's a few of my favorites.

As many people who know me know, I'm a hardcore gamer and been playing Video Games since I was a little kid, I even worked in the Game Industry for about 2 1/2 years. Also I'm that guy that says "hey is that youtube link in 1080p"? 1080p Video even on youtube looks amazing. It's full screen HD quality video. If you had a 60inch TV it would be high res in 1080p. So it's a big deal to some.

Check out this 1min video of Suzy spinning fire to see what 1080p video looks like. Watch in 480p then watch in 1080p and you'll notice a huge difference.

I was having trouble finding HD video a few weeks ago for another game, then I noticed there isn't too many good gaming gameplay clips out there, and so after I edited this video I did a search for" 1080p RIFT Gameplay " on youtube, and all I could find was the trailer.

So this caught my eye, and since I was playing the beta and the NDA was up I'd make a video.High-end pure gameplay of the upcoming PC Game RIFT.
So learned how to capture the gameplay footage properly, then I cut it together took about 6hours, then took about a day to u/l and convert the youtube video.

It was fun, and I learned a bunch about compression too. I'll prob make another one, since it's more editing practice, and I'll be playing Rifts again in the near future.

Been working on updating this blog, and it's needed an overhaul for awhile now. I redid everything created a whole new page, and although it's not quite done, it's close. I like the new look, and happy with this look and style. I created all the art, and have some really cool ideas for some cool video projects in the near future.

Good things to come, merging my personal and professional life together.

Long ago when I was 17, I was one of those kids that knew about computers, and at that time they were considered these strange complex foreign objects that only geeks used. I worked at a gas station with this young average Joe kinda guy who didn't have a computer at the time, didn't understand computers, and thought he didn't need one. I saw him a few years later when I was in college at the local store. I remember like it was yesterday, hey Brian I got my own email address! My how times changed.

Cut forward to over 10 years later, and everyone and their mothers has computers, internet and an email address or 2. I've always had this fear of keeping my personal life and my professional life private, and separate. With sites like Facebook, and the tons of emergent technology out there I feel it's now really hard if not impossible to successfully separate the two. It's 2010, just about everyone has a cell phone, is connected to the internet, has an email account, is on Facebook, or any other number of social media connections. I "Brian Erzen" have been working on my building my personal brand which is part of my name "Erzen Design"and after doing a bunch of reading and research I came to the conclusion I need to make the conscience decision to just be me and people can be accepting or not accepting and it's their choice. I can't hide who I am, and this openness and clarity and honesty has lead to some positive exposure has done more good then harm.

In May a long time friend of mine from San Fransisco was going to be in Los Angeles for a fundraiser for the amazing Burning Man Project Temple of Flux. I told Catie that I'd love to come out and I'll even take pictures of the event for you. Which I did, and the event was an amazing success, as far as I could tell every one had a great time (see pictures here) lots of really cool performances, and over all a fun night. I posted these pictures on my personal Facebook page, and on Flickr. Passes out some business cards, and made some friends. These pictures and personal connections which I was really open with lead to some other amazing opportunities in the following months, which lead to more personal connections, and allowed me to be in creative environments that people that other would kill for. Which is a big change then a year ago, when I was paranoid to even have my picture taken at Burning Man never mind talking about it.

This event in many ways, ended up becoming the catalyst for many great opportunities, and instead of being fearful of the different, bizarre, and exciting I embraced it and directly because of being open and honest to myself I've grown leaps and bounds as a person as well as creatively as well as built of some amazing friendships, creative connections with people, and some really cool projects

Currently I've been working hard on getting exposure for my work. Since to me although I have long term business goals, and I also have a strict code that I'll only support something I believe in, I would like to move towards making a living from Photography and Video work.

So now I'm find myself at many weird, strange, exciting, and tantalizing events, because thats what I'm into and those are the people and connections I've made. One night on the Red Carpet at one of LA's largest film festivals. Next night at the Fetish and Industrial music club taking pictures for the venue. Following week shooting a large spectacular fire performance rehearsal.

Life's good, do what you love, and be yourself. That's the only advice I have.

This year I attended the Hollyshorts Film Festival. I remember being there for the first year, I actually made te program for the first Hollyshorts, and now it's blown up, big time, and every producer, actor, and director friend I know had projects in the fest. I was fortunate to get a Press Pass.

Took some pictures, but full disclosure they are not as good as I would of liked since my flash ended up dying and it took awhile to get replacement batteries. Lesson learned always have rechargeables on hand. This was quite the night, lots of familiar and new faces on the Red Carpet.

My enchanting weekend at Labyrinth of Jareth

I was feeling kinda bummed out this month, because my family has a fairly large reunion in upstate Pennsylvania. Last year was the first time I've been in many years, and I met so many awesome members of my family from all over the country. The plan was to head back for a week in July the weekend of the 18th, but due to real life stepping in as well the the increasing prices of traveling in the summer this wasn't an attainable goal.

2 Weeks left to go and I was working on a short film and someone mentioned that she's going to Labyrinth of Jareth, which is something I've vaguely heard about last year, and the year before, but honestly didn't know much about the event. It's quite amazing, and it's kinda unlike anything else in Los Angeles, I'm guessing it prob similar to the awesomeness that is the Edwardian Ball in San Fransisco, but I've never been so I can't say for sure.

It's a super elaborate fantasy masquerade ball, where everyone is wearing the most amazing and complex costumes you've ever seen outside of a movie. People work many long hours, building, sewing, inventing their costumes all year long for this 2 night event. I had an idea to contact them directly see if I can come to the event to take pictures for the event and I submitted some samples of my work and I was invited to attend both Friday and Saturday.

What I didn't expect is the level of atmosphere that this event had, it was held in the beautiful Park Ave hotel in Downtown, Los Angeles. With theatrical lighting, some large props scattered about, a water fountain, a large courtyard and multiple dance floors. A fantasy world come to life.

The closest way I can describe the setting is, there is a story by Neil Gaiman : Star Dust there is a large fairy festival that happens once every couple of years where all the creatures of fairy gather in a magical market, and it was kinda like that.

Hi, It's been awhile.

Every now and then I would look at this blog and say to myself "wow it's been awhile since I've written anything". Then I'd close the window in Chrome and Post on Facebook, Twitter, or somewhere else. Any information I wanted to convey I could do this through one of those other channels right? For the most part that worked, but having my own professional website/blog that I update frequently has the potential to reach those that don't know me, and as I move forward professional and creativity maybe I'll even make some fans and find other fine talented folks out there looking to collaborate .Which in turn will lead to more work, more creativity and ultimately have a greater long term impact on my career.

One of the major reasons I haven't written in awhile, was I was frustrated by my own personal HTML skills as well as the limitations of using Blogger. I selected Blogger over Wordpress long ago, because I must admit I'm a Google fanboy, I've been using Googles Tools for quite awhile, and for the most part they seem to get it and I like the company mantra "Don't Be Evil".

Google revamped the blogger interface recently, which dramatically increased the flexibility of page design, which makes editing, adding content and changing the user interface much easier. Let's be honest here too, having a blog called "Erzen Design" it can not look poor or unprofessional for the obvious reasons, right?

So check out the newly revamped page for Erzen Design! I'm happy with where it is now, I've added links to my recent Erzen Design Photography and Brian Erzen Production work. 2 Pages of links to my work. Now when I take pictures of someone and I post them online I can response with, yes I have a website and you can view the photos right there. 2010 Has been a great year so far, so much is going on and I'll talk all more about some recent projects soon.

A damn good event taking place at the Downtown Independent Theater in Los Angeles.

Film Courage Interactive is a damn fine event for independent filmmakers, creative artists, and passionate actors, taking place downtown Los Angeles once a month at the Downtown Independent Theater. It;s not like any other event I've been to, it's a meet and greet, QA, movie screening and a afterparty all rolled into one. It Takes place the last Monday of every month at the Downtown Independent and it is about to celebrate it's fourth month next week.
Kevin Deen is a talented actor as well as a good friend of mine, and we've chatted in the past about working together professionally is some capacity. Since we were both going to be at Film Courage, and I had a camera in my possession at the time . We decided to shoot the event for fun, the experience was a great one, made a couple of friends, and saw a fun quirky well acted comedy feature called The Stevie Wondershow. The event was a ton of fun, the footage was as exciting as it could be, and we had a great time. The video was finished and it was put online and maybe the total number of people who watched it were about around 50. You can see that video here:

Thanks for watching if you did, I spent many hours using this video as a learning experience in editing and this video taught me a ton of "what not to do". So it's served it's purpose, I'm quite proud of it considering the restraints of completing this entire with only Kevin's help. I also learned how to better edit footage, as well as pacing, once it was finished a good friend complained that "it's alot of talking heads" this was disappointing, but stuff I need to hear. As I strive to get better and better at what I do I have to learn to adapt and take people's feedback and comments into consideration. I'll make my own decisions and stick with them, but I enjoy seeing other's points of view. Hearing this type of criticism will help make the next video that much better.

After I finished the video above and sent it to Dave from Film Courage, he sent me a link to a video that Director/ Editor Jon Berrien shot at the same event. It had a much different approach to the same event with this quick, tightly edited piece that's only 2mins long. It's short enough you could watch it right now.

Theres a great quote.

I got a ton of experience. Something else I learned will call it an internet truth :no one is going to watch an 8min video on an event they have never heard and no one who went to this event wants to watch an 8min recap. " The next Film Courage Interactive video is going to be much more streamlined, and quicker pace, and you'll be able to see it right here in about a month! (give or take a week or two).

Most people who read this are probably not familiar with Kickstarter. Kickstarter as well as Indieagogo uses crowdsourcing as a way of funding, it's an all or nothing approach. So if you need a certain amount of money, and then figure out a certain amount of time that you think you'll need to reach that goal. I.E. $3000 in 30days, so you now have 30days to get the $3,000, if you can't come up with the totally sum, you get NOTHING, zero zip... and no one's donations go through. If you can reach or surpass your goal all the money is yours to use however you like on your project, it's really that simple. Have a good idea or project and this is a great way to test the waters to see what the interest is, as well as allows people to become involved in your project at an early level, and be a supporter. You might even make a friend in the process. as well as gain incentive items at different price points. It's a pretty neat idea, and with "Social Networking" being the offical buzz word of 2010, much the same way that "Information Superhighway" was the buzz word in 1995. That's where I've seen these campaigns blow up.

In beginning of Augest 2009 I saw a post by filmmaker Arin Crumley he was looking to raise $3,000 for an independent film project, this was the first time I heard of crowdsourcing and of Kickstarter. The Arin isn't a friend, but is an acquaintance I've met years ago at Slamdance, and I've seen some of his other talented work. I liked the project idea, and made an account to donated to his campaign. He campaign was successful.

Recently two filmmaker friends of mine are currently towards the end of their kickstarter campaigns and they seem to be close to the finish line. Director Gary King has the feature film musical How do you write a Joe Schermann Song , and David Branin's Goodbye Promise an experimental drama. Both projects are unique, not your typical idea for an independent and both films look like they are going to be fantastic. I've personally donated to both films, and wish them nothing, but the best. I'm currently working on the promotions and marketing for an upcoming independent Horror film, and we are going to start our own Kickstarter campaign soon. This is a great way to gage project interest, find some passionate supporters and allow us to have that extra bit of money needed so instead of making a good film we can make a great film. Straight On Till Morning is going to be directed this Summer by Craig Ouellette, and I've been able to join along in this adventure,and see first hand how difficult it is to make your own kickstarter campaign as well as produce a feature film.

So far it's been one hell of a learning experience, and hopefully in a couple months we'll have our own kickstarter success story to tell.

Building a community for the Independent Horror Film Straight On Till Morning.

A couple of months ago long time friend and director Craig Ouellette started preproduction on a independent horror film, titled Straight On Till Morning. This full length feature and will be shot sometime this summer and currently we are planning on having our first “official” production meeting next week .
An enjoyment of mine has always been helping support my friends projects, and I feel that by helping others is the right way to go. I have a background promotional marketing, anything from a beer, to large sampling event. One season I was the spokes model for a major company on the Car Show circuit. Also hobby of mine is reading blogs, learning about cutting edge technology, multimedia art, and film production. The first time I was online was way back at my cousins Jeff's house with a Commodore 64 and a 1200buad modem, so I've been online for awhile. It was never strange for me to become friends and engage with people I'd never meet in real life. While talking one afternoon, I shared a couple of ideas I had for the film with Craig, and he said go ahead and make that happen.
Now it's the beginning of April, and we now have 260 fans on Facebook, as we have 108 Followers on Twittter, and it's just going to keep growing and expanding. This helped us spread the word about our project, but here's the great part that I didn't quite expect. It allowed us to find about other fun projects, and support them too. With social networking the world has become that much smaller, and sometimes it's amazing how close a connection you can have with someone without directly knowing them.

We're not just building a fanbase for our film, we are all working together to build a larger fan community and following for independent film.

There's treasure locked in that hard drive! - Editing and Processing Video

Back in July of 09' I borrowed a good friends camera and shot a bunch of various footage all over the East Coast over a 2 week period. Some with close friends, others with family. This included two interviews, A Journey to see the Stanley Cup, a set of Commercials and a few other things I'll talk about in the future.
About 8 to 9 hours of footage in total shot on the Cannon HG10's internal 40gig HardDrive. A affordable small retail camera visually awesome, as long as the lighting doesn't change the picture looks great and can record 1080i. One major flaw is the sound quality is poor. So make sure you have a reliable External Microphone attached, because your going to need it. The camera records in ADVHD fomat a new proprietary format. This format wasn't well supported a year ago. I'd call it the retail format from hell to tell you the truth.
Now 9 months have passed and now ADVHD is much better supported and used more today. Also I'm sure it helped to upgrade to 64x. After many long months I dusted off my old hard drive, through trail and error, and lots of internet research I was able to figure out how to convert this footage.

Now the fun happens.....

Actor Kevin Deen is a good friend of mine and a talented actor, I borrowed a friends camera and we went out to shoot the event for fun and the experience of seeing what it's like to work together. The event was a huge success, the video ended up become bigger and more robust then I would I ever thought. After many, many, long hours, and some strong positive feedback. I present to you this short look, into a fun event taking place in Downtown Los Angeles on a month call Film Courage Interactive, at the amazingly cool and practically unknown place called the Downtown Independent Theater, in Downtown Los Angeles.

When someone takes two pieces of media and mashes them together through creativity and editing I wanna see it and watch it over and over again. Study it, and learn from it. There's a ton of this type of stuff on the net, but sometime it's done at a higher professional level, and this is one of those piece.
This video uses the audio from the movie trailer of Mean Guys and adds juxtaposed images from various Disney animation clips, the astounding part is how well it works to the point that the lip-syncing is well done.
